From the General Manager’s Desk – September 2025
KMCC Members & Guests,
To begin, all of us at Koshkonong Mounds Country Club want to thank all our membership body for a wonderful “Peak” golf season this year. This year, the camaraderie and friendship among members on the golf course and the clubhouse have been terrific and we greatly look forward to that continuing throughout the remainer of this season and into 2026. The support at KMCC hosted events has been greatly welcomed and our event participation numbers among members has increased this year, which is certainly a trend we hope will continue! As many of you know, KMCC is the host of many corporate and/or non-profit outings and events, all of which have been incredibly complimentary of our golf course, clubhouse, staff, and service. We are thrilled to be the continued host to so many of these special groups and look forward to being able to share our club with so many groups and people in the future.
OVERALL IMPROVEMENTS
KMCC has seen so many drastic improvements taking place over the last 3-5 years. In 2025, we were able to complete many projects that were on our list, including the completion of the Hole #1 tee box wall and surrounding areas, new cart path and senior tee box on Hole #2, completion of the hillside of Hole #5 tee box and surrounding area, the removal and fill of the bunker on Hole #8, new ceiling tiles above the dining room floor, improved cart return area near golf shop patio, removal of the old pavilion near member cart storage, and more!
This year, we hosted our second annual Project Kosh golf outing (last year’s centennial outing), where we were able to see more than 50 KMCC members gather to generate money for our club’s improvement project funds. Proud to share we collectively raised $2,000 more than 2024! This gives us a good start on some new projects and see to the completion of some that have already been put into motion. KMCC is special largely because of our membership body, which we had more than 50 of our members prove this year. Thank you all so much for your participation at KMCC and continued contributions to our club.
COURSE HEALTH
This season has certainly not come without its challenges. As many of you know, our grounds were exposed to Black Turfgrass Ataenius, which is something that we have never experienced before. For those who are unsure as to what this is, it is the larvae (grubs) from the small, shiny, black beetles you may see and not think much of. These grubs feed on grass roots, which cause the grass/turf to die. This is not something that can be fixed with a simple “water it”, but instead must be treated a specific way which takes a great deal of care and time. This is the reason for the many brown / splotchy areas you may see on the fairways, especially on the lower & southern parts of the golf course. Our superintendent has begun this process, which is why you will see the area roped off on Hole #1. All these areas our grounds crew is certainly aware of and greatly appreciates your patience as we care for the issues!
Of course, to go with that issue, we also had our irrigation pump go out on us this year, which has made it incredibly difficult to retain a watering schedule which is typically preset and determined by our course superintendent. The pump has been worked on, but it will require some intense maintenance, which we cannot complete at this time, as we would have to go without irrigation for an extended period, which we simply can’t do. What we can assure you is that the area that may look “colorless” are still very much alive, receiving water, and are being maintained the best that they possibly can be.
Please read another additional statement regarding our grounds below from board member Aaron Burke:
If you’ve played recently - you’ll notice some white patches on tee boxes. The summer conditions created a large late season flush of crabgrass - many may have noticed this in their own lawns.
I took the time to spot spray the tee boxes to eliminate the crabgrass. The herbicide used is a pigment inhibitor - stops the production of Chlorophyll, no chlorophyll - no photosynthesis- no photosynthesis - the grass dies. Very “safe” chemistry. It can be a quite “dramatic” visual when you see it. I wanted to share this so there is no confusion or concern - Spoke with Mike Dean prior to applying. Good news is the crabgrass will not go to seed and will eventually die. It will just look a little striking/splotchy for a few weeks. Any questions or concerns please reach out to me directly - Aaron Burke, 920-222-9536
It has certainly been a year of obstacles, but we have persevered and will always strive and work hard toward providing the best possible product that we can. We appreciate your patience, and we look forward to seeing our golf course thrive as we have in the past few years!
